12 November 2002 Daily Trojan (University of Southern California) Cell Phone Phonies I appreciated Dan Port's insights into the scourge of cell phones (Daily Trojan, Nov. 4, 2002), even though he made the wrong decision (he's decided to get one!). I've narrowed it down to one word that describes cell phone users as it relates to about 80 percent of their calls: obsession. Get help. Cell phone users become dependent, and it's not healthy. I'm not referring to the ersatz "brain tumor" urban legend, but rather the fact that your psychological balance is at risk, especially if you're in the first few years away from your childhood home. You need to be alone sometimes, to consolidate your identity, and you can't do that with a Nokia attached to your head. |
