28 February 1980 Los Angeles Times Equal Time The silly request by Assemblyman Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) for equal time because of George Takei's appearances on "Star Trek" re-runs is nothing more than silly opportunism. Takei, merely doing his job, as it were, cannot be considered even remotely to be campaigning for a 1980 office by his appearance in a television show filmed many years ago. If Roos truly wants equal time, the truly logical procedure is for him to try his luck at getting a job as an actor on a television series, and then to see if he can get it scheduled opposite "Star Trek" re-runs. Who knows? There may even be a film, and then Roos himself will be able to say, "The human adventure is just beginning." If Roos gets time for Takei's acting, then Takei should get equal time for Roos' appearances on the floor of the Assembly. Bottom line: The equal time doctrine should apply only to campaign appearances during the election year. | ![]() |
