8 October 2014 Inland Empire Magazine 'Cross' Examination Your description (August 2014, page 160) of the symbol atop the "Peace Tower" on Mt. Rubidoux as a "non-denominational cross" may be misleading, as it seems to convey the idea that it is "non-religious" or "interfaith". In reality, if it is a religious symbol at all (which the term "non-denominational" clearly implies), it can only be a Christian symbol, since all of the other major world faiths -- Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, for example -- are represented by symbols that are very different from the Cross. This is not a major problem, of course, except that Mt. Rubidoux is part of Riverside's public park system and some humble people of non-Christian faiths may feel that this space really belongs to someone else, not to everyone. (Leslie Wilson's photograph, by the way, is quite beautiful, and I'm grateful that you reminded us about this pleasant, nearby place.)
